Assessing What Matters: Using Appropriate and Effective Assessment in K–12 Physical Education
Monday February 16, 2026 9:50am - 10:50am CST
Assessment is a critical component of quality physical education—but when used poorly, it can become time-consuming, confusing, and disconnected from meaningful learning. This session focuses on how to design and implement assessment practices that are appropriate, efficient, and instructionally valuable in K–12 physical education.
Participants will explore the purpose of assessment in PE, examine common assessment mistakes, and learn how to select assessment tools that align with learning outcomes, grade levels, and instructional goals. Using real classroom examples, the session highlights formative and summative assessment strategies that support student learning while keeping students active and engaged.
This interactive session will emphasize practical tools teachers can immediately use, including skill-based rubrics, peer and self-assessment strategies, observational checklists, and product-based assessments. The goal is to help teachers move beyond “checking boxes” and toward assessment practices that genuinely inform instruction and student growth.

Monday February 16, 2026 9:50am - 10:50am CST
This course will help us shift from just seeing behaviors in the classroom to understanding the nervous system for our students and for ourselves. We will define the term “trauma,” articulate the prevalence and nature of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), describe the stress response system and how the brain responds to stress or a potential threat. Then we will spend much of our time focusing on awareness and application of the 4 Pillars of Applied Educational Neuroscience and other Co-Regulation practices from The Regulated Classroom.

Monday February 16, 2026 9:50am - 10:50am CST
This session introduces ClassBank, a highly successful classroom management and PBIS-approved classroom economy system that can be implemented in a single classroom or scaled school-wide. Grading What Matters: Effort vs. Mastery in Secondary Classrooms
Monday February 16, 2026 9:50am - 10:50am CST
In this session, aimed at secondary teachers of all disciplines, we will dig into the tension between effort-based and mastery-based grading. We’ll look at academic research on grading, test anxiety, and achievement, then use real scenarios - “grade killer” exams, missing work, retakes, and falling performance against standards - as prompts for structured discussion. Participants will examine how their current gradebooks reflect (or contradict) their beliefs about learning and leave with 1-2 concrete changes they can try to bring practice closer to their philosophical ideal.

Then we will explain to reteach and how long to do so. After this, a post test should be given to gather data and reenter in the spreadsheet.
